Metamasius

The genus Metamasius belongs to the family Curculionidae, commonly known as weevils, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests that specialize in attacking various monocotyledonous crops. The most notable species, such as Metamasius hemipterus, are particularly destructive to tropical horticultural systems.

These weevils primarily infest crops including bananas, sugarcane, various species of ornamental palms, and pineapples. They are known to target plants that are already stressed or wounded, but they also infest healthy tissues when pest pressure is high, leading to substantial yield losses and degradation of plant stock.

The life cycle of the Metamasius consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs into crevices of the host plant. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, boring into the pseudostem, fruit, or crown of the plant to feed. This internal feeding habit makes them difficult to detect until the plant shows clear symptoms of decline.

The severity of damage caused by this pest is high, as the larvae destroy internal tissues, creating galleries that disrupt nutrient and water transport. This leads to wilting, severe stunting, and the potential collapse of the plant. In many cases, the damage is irreversible, and the physical integrity of the palm or banana stem is compromised beyond recovery.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes the use of aggregation pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult populations, rigorous field sanitation by removing infested material, and the application of systemic chemical treatments in severe cases. Preventing the spread of these weevils through strict quarantine measures remains a priority for international trade.
