Golden-banded palm weevil

The Golden-banded palm weevil (Metamasius aurocinctus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). Originally native to parts of the Neotropics, this weevil has become a major concern for palm growers due to its ability to cause severe damage to various species of palm trees.

The pest primarily targets a wide range of Arecaceae species. Host plants include important agricultural crops such as coconut palms and oil palms, as well as various ornamental palms used in landscaping. Its host preference makes it a threat to both food security in tropical regions and the ornamental plant industry.

The biology of Metamasius aurocinctus revolves around the internal development of larvae within the host plant's tissues. Female weevils lay their eggs in cracks or wounds in the palm trunk or petiole bases. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the soft internal tissues, creating galleries that effectively disrupt the plant's vascular system.

The damage caused by this pest is often lethal to the host. As the larvae feed, they weaken the structural integrity of the palm and impede the transport of water and nutrients. Secondary infections by fungi or bacteria frequently occur in the larval tunnels, exacerbating the damage and accelerating the decline and eventual death of the affected palm.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key tactics include:

• Regular field scouting to identify early signs of infestation such as sap oozing or adult weevil sightings.
• Sanitary practices, including the prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested palm trees to prevent the spread of the population.
• The use of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity.
• Application of systemic insecticides, often through trunk injections, to target larvae residing deep within the plant tissues.
