Banana stem weevil

Metamasius hemipterus, commonly known as the banana stem weevil or sugar cane weevil, is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly destructive insect that primarily targets monocotyledonous crops in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

The host range of this weevil includes banana plants (Musa spp.), sugarcane, various palm species, and pineapples. The beetle is particularly attracted to plants that have been weakened by environmental stress or prior mechanical injuries, but in dense agricultural systems, it acts as a primary pest capable of devastating entire plantations.

The life cycle of the weevil is completed within the host plant tissues. Adult females deposit eggs into crevices or wounds. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the pseudostem or the corm of the banana plant. These internal galleries disrupt the vascular system, significantly limiting the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients.

The damage caused by Metamasius hemipterus is both direct and indirect. Direct damage involves tissue destruction, which leads to stunted growth, reduced fruit quality, and premature death of the plant. Indirectly, the extensive tunneling creates entry points for various phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi, exacerbating the collapse of the plant structure.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pest. Key strategies include the maintenance of orchard hygiene by removing and destroying infested plant material, the use of pheromone traps for population tracking, and the application of selective insecticides. Biological control using predatory ants or entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana is also gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative.
