Systematically, this genus belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Encyrtidae. There are numerous species within the Metaphycus genus, such as Metaphycus helvolus and Metaphycus lounsburyi, which have been studied and utilized globally for their high efficiency in controlling populations of Coccoidea insects.

The primary hosts for Metaphycus are scale insects (Coccoidea) that infest a wide range of plants, including citrus, ornamental foliage, and greenhouse crops. By suppressing these pests, Metaphycus helps prevent the development of sooty mold and physical damage to leaves and stems caused by the sucking habits of the scales.

The life cycle of these parasitoids is strictly endoparasitic. An adult female Metaphycus uses its ovipositor to lay eggs inside the body of a live scale insect. The adult wasp then emerges by chewing a small exit hole in the dead host's skin.
