Cereal leaf aphid

The cereal leaf aphid (Metopolophium albidium) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural ecosystems, specifically targeting cereal crops and grasses by feeding on phloem sap.

The pest primarily infests common cereal crops, including winter wheat, barley, and oats. Besides cultivated plants, M. albidium utilizes various wild grasses as secondary hosts, which facilitates its survival and dispersal across agricultural landscapes throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of this species is characterized by high reproductive rates through parthenogenesis during favorable conditions. Depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, the aphid can complete multiple generations in a single season, leading to exponential population growth if not controlled.

Feeding damage is manifested by chlorosis, leaf rolling, and stunting of the host plant. The withdrawal of large quantities of nutrients severely impacts the overall development of the plant and reduces grain filling, which consequently leads to substantial yield losses in wheat and barley production.
