Cereal aphid
Metopolophium cryptobium
Description
Metopolophium cryptobium is a species of aphid within the Aphididae family that specifically targets cereal crops. As an agronomic pest, it has gained attention for its ability to colonize grain fields and cause yield losses through direct feeding damage and the transmission of plant pathogens.
The host range of this pest primarily includes wheat, barley, and various wild grass species. These aphids are often found on the underside of leaves or within the leaf sheaths, which provides them with microclimatic protection and makes them less susceptible to contact-acting insecticides during the early stages of infestation.
The biology of the species involves cyclical reproduction, moving between parthenogenetic generations throughout the growing season and sexual reproduction during the late autumn to ensure overwintering via eggs. High reproductive rates during warm, dry spring months allow populations to increase exponentially in a short period, posing a risk to cereal development.
Direct damage occurs as the aphids pierce the plant tissues and extract phloem sap. This feeding activity leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and structural weakness of the stem. In addition to direct nutrient loss, heavy infestations can significantly lower grain filling and quality, as the plant redirects resources to cope with the physiological stress caused by the pest.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to maintain aphid populations below economic injury levels. Field monitoring is essential to detect early outbreaks before significant damage occurs. Key control measures include:
- cultural practices such as weed management;
- application of selective systemic insecticides;
- promoting biological control agents like lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
