Description
Systematic position: The rose-grain aphid (Metopolophium dirhodum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its capacity to migrate across landscapes and cause widespread damage to cereal production globally.
Host crops: This aphid species primarily infests members of the Poaceae family, including wheat, barley, oats, and maize. The primary hosts for the overwintering stage are species of Rosa (roses), where eggs are laid in autumn to survive winter conditions before spring migration to cereal fields occurs.
Biology and lifecycle: The species exhibits a heteroecious holocyclic lifestyle. Eggs hatch in early spring, producing stem mothers. These produce several generations of apterous and alate females via parthenogenesis. During the summer months, the population reaches its peak density on grasses and cereal crops, facilitated by rapid asexual reproduction cycles.
Damage and impact: Feeding damage occurs when aphids extract sap from the leaves and stems of host plants. This feeding process causes chlorosis, leaf curling, and overall stunted growth, which severely reduces the photosynthetic area. Furthermore, M. dirhodum is a recognized vector for several plant viruses, notably the Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV).
Control measures: Management strategies emphasize the use of threshold-based insecticide applications during critical crop growth stages. Biological control by natural predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and parasitic wasps is highly effective if chemical disruption is minimized. Cultural practices, such as clearing wild rose bushes from field perimeters, help reduce early-season population build-up.
