Description

Systematic position. Metopolophium festucae, commonly known as the grass aphid, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a significant pest primarily targeting grasses and cereal crops within agricultural ecosystems.

Host crops. This pest primarily infests cereals including oats, wheat, barley, and rye. It also inhabits a wide range of wild grass species, which serve as essential reservoirs during periods when crops are not available, allowing the aphid populations to survive throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The grass aphid reproduces parthenogenetically during the growing season, which allows for extremely rapid population growth. In favorable conditions, they form dense colonies on the undersides of leaves. The life cycle can be highly adaptive to temperature and humidity, with specialized forms developing to survive winter periods.

Damage and economic significance. These aphids feed on phloem sap, which deprives the plant of vital nutrients. Damage symptoms include leaf yellowing, stunting, and necrotic spots. Furthermore, they are efficient vectors of several plant viruses, such as Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), which can cause catastrophic losses in grain yield.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach. Farmers should monitor field edges for early colonization, manage weeds that harbor aphid populations, and encourage natural predators like ladybirds and lacewings. If threshold levels are reached, chemical intervention with selective, systemic insecticides is recommended to minimize impact on beneficial insects.
