Microctonus hyperodae

Microctonus hyperodae is a Hymenopteran wasp belonging to the Braconidae family. It is a highly specialized parasitoid wasp originally native to South America, which was introduced into New Zealand as a classical biological control agent to manage the population of the Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis).

It is important to classify this species as a beneficial organism rather than a plant pest. Its agricultural significance lies in its ability to parasitize adult weevils, which are major pests of ryegrass and other forage crops. By utilizing the host for its development, the wasp effectively reduces the overall impact of the weevil on agriculture.

The life cycle of Microctonus hyperodae is strictly tied to its host. The female wasp inserts an egg into the weevil's body. The developing larva feeds internally, consuming the host's fat bodies and, crucially, its reproductive organs, causing immediate sterility. Once mature, the larva exits the host to pupate, which inevitably leads to the death of the weevil.

The effectiveness of this parasitoid is a classic case of successful biological control. The suppression of the weevil population occurs through two mechanisms: direct mortality of the host and the prevention of new generations by rendering the host infertile, thus minimizing damage to pasture grasses.
