Description

Systematic position. Microlophium carnosum, commonly referred to as the nettle aphid, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized aphid species that has evolved to thrive on host plants within the Urticaceae family.

Host plants. The primary host for this species is the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). While it is considered a specialist, in environments where high populations occur, the aphids can occasionally spill over onto neighboring ornamental plants, herbs, or agricultural crops, potentially causing minor economic or cosmetic damage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a complex alternation between sexual and asexual reproduction. Winter is spent in the egg stage on the stems of the host plant. In spring, stem mothers hatch and give birth to live nymphs. Throughout the summer, multiple generations of winged and wingless parthenogenetic females are produced, ensuring rapid colonization of host plants.

Damage and harm. These aphids feed by piercing plant tissues and extracting phloem sap, usually congregating on the undersides of leaves and on succulent growing tips. Infested plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf curling, and yellowing. The production of honeydew often leads to the growth of sooty mold, which can further hinder photosynthesis and lower the aesthetic or medicinal quality of the host plant.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Microlophium carnosum:

  • Sanitation by removing nettle patches located near sensitive cropping areas.
  • Conservation of natural predators like ladybird beetles, lacewings, and hoverfly larvae.
  • Application of horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps as a targeted, low-impact treatment.
