Micromyzus

Micromyzus is a genus of aphids belonging to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. These small insects are known primarily as specialized pests that target various species of ferns in greenhouses, conservatories, and indoor botanical collections, causing significant distress to host plants.

The primary hosts of Micromyzus are ferns within families such as Aspleniaceae. They are well-adapted to indoor environments, where they thrive due to consistent humidity and temperature levels. Their presence is often overlooked until significant physical damage to the plant becomes visible to the grower.

The biological cycle of this aphid involves rapid reproduction through parthenogenesis. Under favorable greenhouse conditions, generations overlap continuously, allowing the population to explode in a short period. Nymphs and adults feed primarily on the underside of the fronds, where they find the most succulent tissues.

The damage caused by Micromyzus is manifested through the chlorosis, curling, and malformation of fern fronds. As they feed, they withdraw vital nutrients, and their honeydew secretion promotes the growth of sooty mold, which further interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and remain healthy.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Micromyzus control should focus on early detection and targeted intervention:

• Manual inspection and removal of heavily infested fronds to reduce initial population density.
• Application of systemic insecticides approved for ornamental use, ensuring thorough coverage of the leaf undersides.
