Description
Microplitis is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Braconidae, order Hymenoptera. Contrary to being agricultural pests, these insects are essential beneficial agents (parasitoids) that play a vital role in natural pest suppression by attacking various larvae of Lepidoptera.
These wasps target a wide array of pests that damage crops such as vegetables, cotton, corn, and soybean. By specializing on larvae, particularly caterpillars of the Noctuidae family, Microplitis effectively lowers the economic damage threshold caused by these leaf-eating insects in large-scale agriculture.
The biology of the Microplitis genus is based on endoparasitism. A female wasp locates a suitable host larva and inserts an egg into its body. The lifecycle concludes when the mature larva emerges from the weakened caterpillar to pupate. It spins a silk cocoon, often in close proximity to the host.
