Microplitis croceipes is a species of braconid wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera. Contrary to being classified as a primary plant pest, this organism is widely recognized in agronomy as a valuable parasitoid wasp that serves as a natural biological control agent in diverse agricultural ecosystems.

This wasp primarily targets the larval stages of Noctuidae moths, particularly the corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea). Crops that benefit from its presence include cotton, corn, soybeans, and tomatoes. By parasitizing these lepidopteran pests, the wasp significantly reduces their damage to plant tissues and yields.

The life cycle begins when an adult female wasp detects a host larva via olfactory cues and injects an egg into its body. The larval parasitoid develops internally, consuming the host's non-essential tissues. Once mature, the larva emerges and spins a cocoon, eventually causing the death of the caterpillar host.

While often associated with damaged crops, the insect's role is strictly beneficial. It does not feed on plant tissues itself. Instead, it provides a regulatory service that suppresses pest outbreaks, reducing the need for chemical intervention and promoting healthier crop growth throughout the season.

Avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides during peak wasp activity is critical for maintaining population levels.
