Microplitis plutellae is a significant species of braconid wasp (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) renowned in the field of agriculture as a highly effective parasitoid. Contrary to being a pest, this insect is an essential component of biological control programs designed to reduce crop damage caused by harmful caterpillars.
The primary target of this beneficial wasp is the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), which is notoriously difficult to control due to its rapid resistance to conventional insecticides. Microplitis plutellae has evolved as a specialized natural enemy, locating its host with high precision across various cruciferous crops such as cabbage, broccoli, and canola.
The lifecycle begins when the adult female wasp searches for early-instar larvae of the diamondback moth. Upon finding a host, she deposits an egg inside the caterpillar. Once the parasitoid larva matures, it emerges from the dying caterpillar and spins a small, white or brownish silk cocoon, often attached to the host's remains or the leaf surface.
