The genus Milvus (kites) belongs to the family Accipitridae and the order Accipitriformes. While not classified as traditional plant pests that consume crops, kites are significant elements of the agricultural ecosystem. Their interaction with farming is complex, acting both as potential threats to livestock and as natural controllers of rodent populations.

Biological features of the kite include a diet primarily consisting of small mammals, reptiles, and occasionally carrion. By hunting field mice and voles, they indirectly benefit crop protection efforts, as these rodents are major pests of cereals and forage crops. Their foraging activity often centers on open, freshly harvested, or ploughed fields.

The life cycle involves seasonal breeding, with kites constructing nests in high canopy trees near agricultural lands. The rearing of chicks requires a steady supply of prey, which often leads to increased activity near farmsteads. During this period, the need for effective site management to prevent conflict becomes particularly important.

The economic impact of kites is generally limited to poultry farming, where they may prey on free-ranging chicks. In large-scale arable farming, they do not cause direct damage to plants. However, their presence can interfere with mechanical harvesting or aerial operations if the concentration of birds becomes excessive within a small area.

Integrated management measures are recommended to mitigate any issues caused by kites. These include

  • installing bio-acoustic deterrents;
  • using visual deterrents like reflective ribbons or decoys;
  • maintaining enclosed structures for small livestock;
  • avoiding the accumulation of organic waste that might attract prey.
Protective measures should always comply with local environmental regulations as many raptor species are legally protected.
