Description
The spruce twig aphid (Mindarus obliquus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Mindaridae. It is widely known for causing severe damage to various coniferous species, particularly within nursery settings, residential landscapes, and managed forest stands.
The primary hosts for this pest include spruce trees (Picea) and, occasionally, true firs (Abies). By targeting the new growth of the current season, the aphid disrupts the plant's structural development, which can lead to long-term health issues for young trees if the infestation is not managed properly.
The life cycle of Mindarus obliquus is highly synchronized with the bud-break phenology of its host trees. The aphid overwinters in the egg stage, typically deposited near the buds. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs immediately migrate to the developing needles to commence feeding.
