Description
Systematic position. The striped plant bug (Miris striatus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a well-documented species that inhabits various woody plants and is frequently encountered in orchards across temperate regions, functioning as both a generalist feeder and a potential pest.
Affected crops. This species shows a preference for deciduous trees and shrubs. It is commonly found on a range of fruit crops including apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Additionally, it frequently uses hawthorn, hazel, and oak as alternative hosts, which facilitates its spread and survival in mixed landscapes near agricultural areas.
Biology and life cycle. Miris striatus completes one generation per year. The species overwinters in the egg stage. Eggs are typically inserted into the bark or young woody tissues of host plants. Hatching occurs in early spring, synchronized with the bud burst of the host trees, allowing the nymphs to begin feeding immediately on tender plant tissues.
Damage patterns and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap. This feeding activity causes distinctive damage: small, pale spots appear on the leaves, which eventually turn into necrotic holes as the affected tissue dies. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and damage to developing fruit buds, reducing overall yield and quality.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this bug. Key measures include maintaining orchard hygiene by removing heavily infested shoots and cleaning bark to destroy overwintering sites. In cases of high population density, chemical control using targeted insecticides should be applied during the early nymphal stages to prevent significant damage before the blossoming period.
