Description
Molopopterus theae is a specialized insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This pest is a highly specialized phytophage that causes significant economic damage to commercial tea plantations in its native regions, primarily within Asia.
The primary host plant for this pest is the tea bush (Camellia sinensis). These insects preferentially colonize young, tender shoots and leaves where sap flow is most abundant. Feeding damage during early growth stages significantly impacts the overall quality and yield of the final tea leaf harvest.
The insect's life cycle is closely linked to regional climatic conditions. Both adults and nymphs lead a concealed lifestyle on the underside of leaves. Breeding occurs rapidly during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures, allowing the species to produce several generations within a single growing season.
Feeding damage manifests as curling, deformation, and chlorosis along the edges of young leaves. Necrotic spots form at the sites of puncture wounds, which disrupt the plant's photosynthetic processes. During mass outbreaks, the pest can lead to premature leaf drop and a severe reduction in the biomass growth of the tea bush.
Management strategies require an integrated approach combining agrotechnical and chemical methods. Key practices include regular pruning and thinning of bushes to improve airflow, which makes the plantation less hospitable to the leafhoppers. If economic injury thresholds are exceeded, systemic insecticides approved for use on tea crops are applied to manage population levels.
