Description
Monalonion bahiense is a species belonging to the family Miridae (plant bugs), order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, primarily known for causing substantial economic losses in cocoa-producing regions across Latin America.
The primary host plant for this insect is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). While the pest occasionally feeds on other hosts, its impact on cocoa is most severe, specifically targeting the fruit pods and developing shoots, which directly affects the volume and quality of the harvest.
The biology of this bug is synchronized with the phenology of the cocoa tree. Females deposit eggs within the tissue of the fruit pods. The nymphs emerge and pass through several instar stages, feeding aggressively on the plant's sap. This lifecycle allows the population to rapidly increase in favorable warm and humid conditions.
The damage caused by Monalonion bahiense is characterized by small necrotic lesions on the pod surface caused by their piercing-sucking mouthparts.
