Cacao mirid bug

Monalonion flavisignatum is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. This species is widely recognized in Latin American cacao-producing regions as a primary threat, causing substantial qualitative and quantitative losses in cacao production through its feeding activities on pods and stems.

The host range is primarily focused on the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The bug prefers to feed on developing pods and tender succulent stems. By inserting its proboscis into the plant tissue to extract sap, the insect induces physiological stress and physical damage that stunts the normal development of the plant and its fruit.

The life cycle of the bug is well-adapted to tropical environments. Females oviposit directly into the epidermis of young fruits or stems. The transition from egg to nymph and then to adult occurs rapidly under warm and humid conditions, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the year, which maintains a constant pressure on the plantation.

The damage is characterized by the appearance of dark, necrotic spots and lesions on the surface of the cacao pods. These lesions are caused by the injection of salivary enzymes during feeding, which lead to localized tissue death. Often, these wounds facilitate secondary infections by fungi, leading to pod rot and total destruction of the internal beans if not managed correctly.

Effective management and control strategies include the following practices:

• Implementing regular sanitation by removing and destroying infested pods to reduce the inoculum.
• Maintaining optimal shade and pruning density to manage the microclimate unfavorable to the pest.
• Utilizing selective insecticide applications targeted at the peak activity periods of the insect.
• Conducting continuous visual monitoring to detect population increases before significant damage occurs.
