Description
Monalonion megiston is a species of mirid bug belonging to the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily affects cocoa plantations, causing severe economic damage in tropical regions of Central and South America.
The primary host for this pest is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). The insects target various parts of the tree, specifically focusing on succulent young shoots, ripening pods, and flowering structures, drawing nutrients directly from the plant vascular system through their piercing-sucking mouthparts.
The life cycle of the bug progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically deposit their eggs into the soft tissues of the stems or pods. Once hatched, the nymphs feed voraciously, passing through several instars before reaching the adult stage, which continues the cycle of destruction on the host plant.
