Boxwood leaf miner

The boxwood leaf miner (Monarthropalpus flavus, commonly known as M. buxi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests affecting boxwood shrubs (Buxus spp.), causing aesthetic and physiological damage to plants in gardens and landscapes.

The primary hosts of this pest are various species of Buxus. The damage is caused by larvae that feed within the mesophyll layer of the leaves. As they feed, they create blister-like galls on the underside of the leaves. This activity interferes with photosynthesis and can lead to chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature defoliation of the infested plant.

The life cycle of the boxwood leaf miner consists of one generation per year. Adult midges emerge in late spring, coincident with the emergence of new foliage. Females lay eggs under the leaf surface. Upon hatching, the larvae move into the leaf tissue and remain there throughout the growing season, protected by the leaf cuticle, before pupating the following spring.

Symptoms of an infestation are often subtle at first. They appear as small, yellowish or orange spots on the upper leaf surface, with corresponding bumps on the underside. Heavy infestations cause the foliage to become unsightly and brittle. If left untreated, the cumulative damage can significantly weaken the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stress.

Effective management strategies combine cultural practices and chemical control.

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves before the adult midges emerge in spring.
• Applying systemic insecticides that are absorbed into the leaf tissue, which target the larvae feeding inside the galls.
• Ensuring healthy plant conditions through proper fertilization and watering to improve natural resistance.
