Description
The boxwood leaf miner (Monarthropalpus buxi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family. It is considered one of the most destructive pests specifically targeting boxwood (Buxus) species. Adult flies are small, yellowish-orange midges that appear in late spring to mate and lay eggs.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. Female flies deposit eggs directly into the leaf tissue of new growth. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel inside the leaf, feeding on the internal tissues. This feeding activity stimulates the plant to form characteristic galls—raised, blister-like structures that provide shelter for the larvae throughout the year.
Damage symptoms appear as yellowish or brownish spots on the upper side of the leaves, while corresponding swellings become visible on the undersides. Heavy infestations cause leaves to turn yellow, dry out, and eventually drop prematurely. This results in sparse foliage, which severely diminishes the aesthetic value of the shrubs and compromises their overall vitality.
Managing this pest requires a proactive approach, as once the larvae are inside the leaves, they are shielded from most external treatments. Monitoring for adult emergence is crucial for timing chemical interventions. In severe cases, the cumulative damage can lead to the death of branches or, if left untreated, the entire plant.
