Yellow pecan aphid

The Yellow pecan aphid (Monelliopsis pecanis) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that exclusively attacks trees in the genus Carya, with a primary focus on the pecan (Carya illinoinensis), making it a major concern for commercial pecan growers across various regions.

The primary host for this pest is the pecan tree. Damage is typically concentrated on the foliage. Under favorable conditions, particularly in warm and humid climates, the populations can explode, creating a massive drain on the tree's nutritional resources and significantly impacting the seasonal yield.

Regarding its biology, Monelliopsis pecanis exhibits a complex life cycle. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, typically tucked into bark crevices. As temperatures rise in the spring, nymphs emerge and start feeding on developing leaves. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations overlap, with winged adults facilitating the rapid spread of the population across the orchard canopy.

The damage caused by these aphids is twofold. First, direct feeding causes leaf curling, yellowing, and eventual chlorosis. Second, the heavy production of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surface. This layer of fungus significantly reduces photosynthetic efficiency, leading to weakened trees and reduced kernel quality in harvested nuts.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that balances chemical and biological control methods:
