Description

Systematic position. The pest Monodon belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. In agricultural practice, it is identified as a specialized insect that targets the generative organs of host plants, causing significant economic losses by attacking the seeds during the development stage.

Crops and damage. The primary targets for this pest are members of the Fabaceae family, particularly peas, beans, and fava beans. The pest causes substantial yield reductions because the larvae develop inside the seeds, consuming the endosperm and embryo, which renders the produce unsuitable for either sowing or consumption.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the insect is strictly synchronized with the maturation of host plant fruits. Adults lay eggs on the surface of young pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seed, where they complete their development until reaching the adult stage. Depending on regional climate conditions, the pest may produce one or more generations per season.

Nature of damage. Infested seeds often appear normal externally; however, a closer inspection reveals small, circular exit holes made by the emerging adults. Internally, the seed is often reduced to debris, which leads to a massive loss in germination rates and severe degradation of commodity quality, often making the batch unmarketable.

Protection measures. Control strategies combine agronomic and chemical methods. Critical steps include maintaining spatial isolation, implementing deep autumn tillage to destroy overwintering stages, and utilizing seed treatment with systemic insecticides. During the vegetation period, spraying crops with specialized insecticides upon reaching the economic injury level is recommended.
