Description

Systematic position: The silkworm (Bombyx mori) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Bombycidae. While widely known for silk production, in agricultural settings, its larvae can act as pests by causing significant defoliation of mulberry trees (Morus), especially in regions where commercial silkworm breeding is poorly controlled.

Host plants: The primary host is the genus Morus. While they are specialized feeders, in cases of abandoned plantations or high population density, they can severely compromise the health of the host trees, reducing both vegetative growth and fruit production.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs typically overwinter on twigs or trunks. After hatching, the larvae undergo five developmental stages (instars) of aggressive feeding, followed by pupation within a protective silken cocoon.

Nature of damage and economic impact: Larvae feed on leaf tissue, starting from skeletonization to consuming the entire leaf surface. Severe infestations result in extensive defoliation, which causes significant physiological stress to the tree, retards shoot development, and reduces the tree's resilience to environmental stressors.
