The Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus) belongs to the order Artiodactyla and the family Moschidae. While typically known for its unique appearance, in the context of commercial forestry, it is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant damage to nursery seedlings and young forest plantations.
The biology of the species is centered on a solitary lifestyle within coniferous forest zones. Their dietary habits become a problem for foresters in late winter, when natural foraging resources are scarce and the animals shift their diet toward young woody shoots and buds of trees.
The most susceptible cultures include young coniferous trees, especially fir and cedar. The musk deer primarily target the apical and lateral shoots, which are essential for the vertical growth and structural integrity of the young trees during their formative years.
The damage pattern is distinct, characterized by clean, clipped branches at heights ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters. The economic harmfulness is high, as repeated browsing leads to stunted development, significant deformities in the stem, and an increased vulnerability to secondary infections and fungal pests.
Effective protection measures for forestry sites include the use of physical barriers such as fencing, which remains the most reliable method for protecting young nursery stock. Additionally, applying biodegradable, scent-based repellents and maintaining designated browsing areas away from vulnerable plantations help manage the impact of these animals.
