Face fly
Musca autumnalis
Description
The face fly (Musca autumnalis) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Muscidae. Often confused with the common house fly, this species is uniquely adapted to feed on the secretions around the eyes, nose, and mouth of cattle and horses, making it a significant pest in the livestock industry.
The species does not feed on crops, but its impact on agriculture is substantial due to its role as a persistent parasite. By feeding on facial fluids, face flies cause significant irritation and stress, which interferes with the natural grazing behavior of livestock and results in weight loss and reduced milk production.
The life cycle of the face fly is rapid and highly dependent on temperature. Eggs are laid in fresh bovine feces, which serves as the primary food source for developing larvae. After a short period of larval growth and pupation in the soil or dung, the adult flies emerge, capable of completing several generations in a single season.
The most severe damage caused by Musca autumnalis is the mechanical transmission of pathogens. These flies are the primary vectors for Moraxella bovis, the bacterium responsible for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (pinkeye). Their activity causes eye damage that can lead to severe inflammation, ulcers, and permanent blindness.
Control strategies for face flies are critical for animal welfare:
- Application of insecticide-impregnated ear tags on cattle.
- Use of back-rubbers and dust bags treated with insecticides for self-treatment.
- Prompt removal and proper management of manure to disrupt larval development.
- Deployment of biological control agents and predator insects where appropriate.
Effective management requires a combination of chemical control and environmental sanitation. By targeting the adult flies during the peak season and limiting the breeding sites in pastures and feedlots, farmers can significantly reduce the incidence of fly-borne diseases and improve overall herd health.
