Description
Systematic position: The housefly (Musca domestica) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Muscidae. It is one of the most widely distributed synanthropic insects, thriving in close association with humans and intensive livestock farming environments.
Impacted areas: While not a direct plant pest, the housefly causes significant agricultural losses in barns, feedlots, and food processing facilities. It contaminates stored agricultural products, livestock feed, and equipment, creating sanitary risks that compromise product quality.
Biology and lifecycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Under optimal temperatures, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately 7 to 10 days. Females lay batches of eggs in decomposing organic matter, including manure, compost, and rotting agricultural waste.
Damage and harmfulness: The housefly is a major vector for pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and parasites. In livestock production, their presence causes severe annoyance and stress to animals, leading to reduced milk yield, weight loss, and the potential transmission of mastitis and other infectious diseases among the herd.
