Description
Systematic position. The blister beetle (Mylabris dicincta) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Meloidae. These insects are biologically characterized by the production of cantharidin, a toxic chemical compound in their hemolymph that acts as a natural defense mechanism against predators and can cause blistering on human skin upon contact.
Host crops and damage. This pest primarily targets leguminous plants, such as beans, soybeans, and peas, as well as various flowering ornamental plants. The adult beetles possess high feeding activity, focusing on the flowers, buds, and young pods. This feeding pattern prevents proper fruit setting, leading to significant yield losses in commercial agriculture.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Mylabris dicincta includes a process called hypermetamorphosis. While the larval stages are often parasitic or predatory, living in bee nests or preying on grasshopper eggs, the adult stage is strictly phytophagous. Adults are diurnal, preferring warm, sunny conditions to feed and mate, which often coincides with the peak blooming period of agricultural crops.
Pest significance. The economic damage is caused by the adults' ability to strip a plant of its reproductive organs rapidly. Because these beetles are often highly mobile and can migrate in swarms, a localized infestation can spread across a field within a few days, requiring urgent intervention to protect the crop's yield potential.
Control measures. Management of this pest requires a combination of monitoring and chemical strategies. Recommended practices include:
