Description

The blister beetle (Mylabris oleae) is a member of the Meloidae family of beetles. These insects are well-documented in agronomy for their presence in fields during the flowering stage of various crops. They contain a substance called cantharidin, which serves as a defensive mechanism against predators but poses a toxic risk if ingested by livestock through contaminated fodder.

This pest primarily attacks the reproductive organs of plants, including flowers, buds, and young pods. In terms of host plants, it shows a significant preference for legumes such as chickpeas, lentils, and beans, as well as various wild flowering plants. By consuming pollen and floral tissues, the beetles directly prevent fertilization, leading to severe yield losses in affected fields.

The larval stages are complex; many blister beetle larvae are parasitic, often developing inside the nests of solitary bees where they feed on provisions and bee larvae, making their population dynamics unpredictable.
