The Mylabris phalerata, commonly known as a type of blister beetle, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Meloidae. This beetle is easily identified by the bold orange or yellow patterns on its black wing covers. It is biologically protected by cantharidin, a toxic substance in its hemolymph that acts as a defense mechanism against avian and small mammal predators.
This pest is highly destructive to various agricultural crops, specifically targeting legumes. Its primary food source includes the flowers, buds, and immature fruits of plants such as soybeans, peanuts, chickpeas, and alfalfa. In addition to field crops, they can cause significant damage to vegetable gardens and flower beds during the peak flowering season.
