Systematic position. The triangular blister beetle (Mylabris triangulifera) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Meloidae. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest capable of causing substantial damage to the reproductive organs of various field crops during their critical flowering stages.

Crops and damage profile. The beetle primarily targets leguminous and composite crops. Adults feed aggressively on floral structures, including anthers, pistils, and petals, as well as young ovaries. This feeding behavior disrupts the pollination process and fruit set, leading to severe yield losses in pulse crops and other flowering plants.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles are typically active during warm, sunny days. The larval stages of many Meloidae species are highly specialized, often developing within the nests of solitary bees where they feed on larvae and food stores, which makes their population dynamics closely tied to local pollinator health.

Harmfulness. The primary economic damage is caused by the adult beetles during their peak feeding period. High populations of Mylabris triangulifera can destroy most blossoms in a field within days if left unmonitored. The loss of reproductive tissues prevents the development of pods and seeds, directly reducing final output and product quality.

Control measures. Effective management relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining field edges and controlling weeds that provide alternate food sources are essential. If economic thresholds are exceeded, targeted application of contact insecticides is necessary, ensuring careful timing to minimize negative impact on non-target beneficial insects and pollinators.
