Privet aphid

The privet aphid (Myzus ligustri) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized pest primarily targeting species within the genus Ligustrum, commonly utilized in horticulture for aesthetic hedging and ornamental garden borders.

The damage caused by this aphid primarily affects the foliage and young shoots of privet plants. By sucking sap from the phloem, the aphids deprive the plant of essential nutrients, leading to reduced vigour. This is particularly problematic in landscape design where the visual health of the hedge is paramount.

The life cycle of Myzus ligustri is characterized by overwintering as eggs on the stems of the host plant. Once spring temperatures rise, nymphs emerge to establish colonies. Over the summer, multiple overlapping generations occur, spreading rapidly via winged morphs that migrate to colonize fresh growth on the shrubs.

Symptoms of infestation include curled, chlorotic, or distorted leaves. A significant secondary issue is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungal coating covers the leaf surfaces, preventing photosynthesis and further weakening the plant's structural integrity.
