Plum aphid

Systematic position. The plum aphid Myzus mumecola belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect pest known for colonizing various species within the Prunus genus, causing significant physiological stress to host plants.

Host plants. The primary hosts include domesticated plum trees and wild Prunus species. While less common, these aphids may occasionally infest apricot and peach trees, leading to stunted shoot growth and reduced fruit quality in commercial and home orchards.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes a complex life cycle, overwintering as eggs on the bark of young twigs near the buds. As soon as temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into stem mothers, which start several generations of asexual reproduction. Winged morphs develop to facilitate dispersal throughout the orchard during the growing season.

Damage and harmfulness. Aphids feed on the plant sap, typically clustering on the undersides of leaves and on growing tips. Feeding causes leaves to curl, yellow, and wither prematurely. Furthermore, the aphids excrete honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking light and hindering the photosynthetic capacity of the tree.

Protection measures. Integrated pest management strategies involve the following:

• Early spring applications of dormant oils or insecticides to eradicate overwintering eggs.
• Systemic insecticide treatments during the onset of the growing season if population thresholds are exceeded.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and hoverflies to maintain biological balance.
• Routine pruning of heavily infested shoots to physically reduce the pest population density.

Effective monitoring is crucial for successful control. Farmers should inspect trees during the budding stage to detect early colony formation and prevent widespread infestations across the orchard site.
