Forget-me-not aphid

Systematic position. Myzus myosotidis is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect species often found on specific host plants. As a member of the Myzus genus, it shares common characteristics with other well-known aphid pests that affect various agricultural and horticultural crops.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets plants within the Boraginaceae family, with Myosotis (forget-me-nots) being a key host. It can also colonize other related herbaceous species, establishing significant populations that feed on the sap of the host plant throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. Aphids typically exhibit rapid parthenogenetic reproduction during the warmer months, allowing population numbers to surge quickly. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, usually deposited on the basal parts of the host plant, ensuring the species' survival across seasons.

Damage and harmfulness. The insects aggregate on the underside of leaves and young shoot tips, causing curling, chlorosis, and stunted growth. By sucking plant sap, they significantly weaken the host. Furthermore, their honeydew secretion fosters the growth of sooty mold, and they are known to act as vectors for various plant viruses, which can lead to severe crop yield losses.
