The cherry aphid (Myzus padellus) belongs to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. It is a highly specialized sap-sucking pest that frequently impacts the health and productivity of various stone fruit trees across temperate climate zones.
Its primary host plants include various species of the genus Prunus, with a strong preference for cultivated cherry and bird cherry. The aphids typically aggregate on the undersides of young leaves and the succulent terminals of shoots during the active growing season.
The biological cycle of this species is complex, involving overwintering as eggs on the bark near dormant buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, initiating multiple successive generations of wingless and winged adults that expand the colony rapidly.
The economic impact is primarily due to the physical damage caused by feeding: foliage becomes tightly curled, discolored, and stunted. Severe infestations cause terminal shoot death, premature leaf drop, and the deposition of honeydew, which facilitates the growth of sooty mold, further stressing the trees.
