The Philadelphus aphid (lat. Myzus philadelphi) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This species is specifically adapted to feed on the sap of plants within the genus Philadelphus, commonly referred to as mock orange, making it a significant concern for gardeners and nursery managers.

The primary host plants affected by this pest are various species and cultivars of the mock orange shrub. The aphids primarily target the most vulnerable parts of the plant, specifically young, succulent shoots, developing leaves, and floral buds, where sap flow is most abundant and accessible.

The biology and lifecycle of Myzus philadelphi are typical for many aphid species, involving an alternation of generations. They overwinter as eggs, which are deposited near the leaf buds of the host shrub. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs undergo rapid development, with several generations of wingless and winged females reproducing asexually throughout the warm season.

Furthermore, the aphids excrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which often facilitates the growth of sooty mold fungus. This black fungal covering not only ruins the aesthetic appearance of the shrub but also interferes with the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.
