Myzus sasakii
Description
Systematic position. Myzus sasakii is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized aphid species that interacts closely with specific host plants, often remaining unnoticed until the population reaches a density capable of causing visual harm.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets species within the Phellodendron genus, most notably the Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense). It is frequently found in nurseries and botanical gardens where these plants are cultivated, requiring close monitoring during the spring and early summer seasons.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically begins with overwintering eggs located in the bark crevices of the host tree. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices. Throughout the season, the aphid produces several generations through parthenogenesis, allowing for rapid colonization of new leaf tissue and terminal buds.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. By piercing the plant tissue and extracting phloem sap, the aphids cause leaves to curl and shoots to become stunted. The constant removal of nutrients weakens the plant's structural integrity. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can severely compromise the plant's ability to undergo normal photosynthesis.
