The Wharf borer (Nacerda melanura) is a beetle of the Oedemeridae family, widely known as a technical pest of damp and decaying wood. It is commonly found in maritime environments, dockyards, and damp structural elements of buildings where wood is in direct contact with moist soil or water.
The larval stage is responsible for the damage. These larvae bore galleries into wood that has already been weakened by fungal decay or high moisture content. Because they prefer damp conditions, they are notoriously difficult to detect until significant structural damage has occurred within foundations, wharf piles, or basement timber.
