Description
Nalepella octonema is a specialized plant-feeding mite belonging to the Eriophyidae family. As a member of the Acari order, this organism is known for its microscopic size and its tendency to infest coniferous plants, particularly species of the genus Picea (spruce) and Abies (fir).
The biology of this mite revolves around its life cycle, which typically occurs on the foliage of the host tree. Nalepella octonema goes through egg, nymph, and adult stages throughout the growing season. The mite thrives in cool, humid conditions, which allow for multiple overlapping generations, often leading to rapid population explosions if left unchecked.
The primary damage caused by these mites is the result of direct feeding on needle tissue. By extracting cell contents, the mites induce chlorosis, where needles turn yellow or brown. Eventually, severe infestations result in premature needle drop, causing the tree to look sparse and significantly lowering its ornamental and ecological value.
Identifying an infestation can be challenging due to the mite's size. Symptoms often include a loss of the needle's waxy luster, thinning of the canopy, and sometimes stunted growth of new shoots. An accurate diagnosis usually requires examining the base of the needles under high magnification to confirm the presence of these worm-like mites.
Management strategies focus on reducing the mite population to prevent aesthetic and physiological decline:
