Description
Naranga (Naranga diffusa) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. This insect is primarily recognized as a significant pest in rice-producing regions, where its presence can cause substantial economic losses if not managed correctly.
The primary host plant for Naranga larvae is rice (Oryza sativa). In addition to cultivated rice, the pest is known to inhabit various wild grasses that act as alternative food sources, allowing the population to survive and reproduce outside the main cropping seasons.
The biology of Naranga follows a complete metamorphosis life cycle. Female moths lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. The larvae (caterpillars) emerge and go through several larval instars, feeding voraciously on plant tissues. Pupation typically occurs within folded leaves or sheltered areas of the rice stalk.
