Nassophasis
Nassophasis
Description
Systematic position. Nassophasis (Nassophasis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are typical representatives of the Curculioninae subfamily, specializing in feeding on the tissues of various plants, which makes them a significant subject for study in applied entomology.
Crops and economic impact. The primary distribution area of the genus is linked to regions growing legume crops, including soybeans. Both adults and larvae cause damage to the generative organs of plants. The economic impact lies in the reduction of yields due to damage to inflorescences, young pods, and seeds, leading to deformation, stunted growth, or a total loss of grain quality.
Biology and life cycle. The insect's life cycle is closely tied to the phenology of host plants. Females lay eggs directly into the tissues of pods or stems. The emerging larvae feed actively inside the plant, creating tunnels that disrupt the physiological processes of nutrition and development. After completing the pupal stage, which usually occurs in the soil or within plant debris, the next generation of adults emerges.
Character of damage. The main signs of infestation include the appearance of specific pin-prick punctures on the surface of pods and stems, created by adults during feeding. Internal damage caused by larvae often remains hidden until harvest. Infested areas serve as entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which significantly aggravates crop losses.
Protection measures. To control population density, an integrated approach including agrotechnical and chemical methods is recommended:
- Adherence to crop rotation, avoiding planting legumes on the same field for more than two consecutive years.
- Thorough soil cultivation after harvest to destroy pupae in plant residues.
- Application of approved systemic insecticides during the period of mass adult migration.
- Field monitoring using pheromone traps to determine the optimal timing for treatments.
