Description
The genus Neaspilota belongs to the fruit fly family (Tephritidae), order Diptera. These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target the floral structures of plants within the Asteraceae family. Their biological adaptation allows them to thrive in environments where host plants are abundant and concentrated.
The primary hosts of Neaspilota include various species of Coreopsis, Aster, and other ornamental or wild members of the sunflower family. The impact of these pests is observed mainly in horticultural settings where the damage to flower heads directly affects the plant's reproductive potential and ornamental value.
The biological cycle of these flies is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plants. Adult females deposit eggs into developing buds.
