Strawberry aphid

Systematic position: The strawberry aphid (Nectarosiphon fragariella) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a specialized pest known primarily for its role as a vector for various plant viruses rather than for direct sap-sucking damage.

Crops affected: The primary host is the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). While it can survive on related wild species, high-density commercial strawberry fields provide an ideal environment for this pest to multiply rapidly and cause significant economic losses.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically overwinters as eggs on the leaf stalks and crowns of the strawberry plant. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices. Through a series of asexual generations, the population increases exponentially, eventually producing winged forms that migrate to colonize other plants within or adjacent to the field.

Damage and pest status: Direct damage involves curling and yellowing of the leaves due to nutrient extraction. However, the true economic threat lies in its ability to transmit persistent viruses, such as strawberry crinkle virus and strawberry mild yellow edge virus, which cause irreversible decline in plant vigor and yield.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial. Strategies include selecting virus-free certified planting material, maintaining clean field edges, and regular scouting for aphid colonies. Chemical control should be targeted, using systemic insecticides only when infestation thresholds are exceeded to minimize impact on beneficial insects.
