Description

The Wheat head armyworm (Neleucania albilinea) is a destructive lepidopteran insect belonging to the Noctuidae family. This pest is primarily known for its impact on small grain production, where larvae can cause severe economic losses by feeding on the reproductive parts of the plant during the head development stage.

This species primarily targets cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In some agricultural systems, it may also infest corn and various wild grasses. The larvae are particularly mobile, allowing them to move between fields in search of fresh plant tissue as the host crops mature.

The life cycle of the Wheat head armyworm typically involves one or two generations per year, depending on the latitude and climate. Pupation occurs in the soil, where the insect remains protected during the winter. Following emergence in the spring, adult moths engage in nocturnal flight and egg-laying on the host plant leaves.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct: young larvae consume leaves, but as they mature, they begin to feed directly on the heads of the grain. They remove the kernels, leaving the glumes empty, which creates a classic appearance of damaged heads. This behavior can significantly reduce both the yield quantity and the overall test weight of the grain.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices include plowing fields after harvest to disrupt pupal stages and removing grassy weed reservoirs around fields. Chemical control involves the application of registered insecticides during the boot or heading stages when larval populations exceed economic thresholds, ideally applied at dusk to maximize contact efficacy.
