Description

Systematic position and characteristics. The genus Nemastoma belongs to the family Nemastomatidae within the order Opiliones (harvestmen). In the context of agronomy, these arachnids are recognized as permanent residents of the soil surface and litter layer. While they are often considered part of the beneficial soil fauna, in specific agricultural systems, they require monitoring to prevent imbalances in the ecosystem.

Affected crops. Nemastoma species are commonly found in fields of cereal crops, vegetable gardens, and orchards. They are particularly prevalent in areas characterized by high humidity and significant amounts of organic mulch. Their presence is often associated with fields practicing conservation tillage, where the soil structure and moisture levels remain optimal for their survival throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Nemastoma is strongly influenced by soil temperature and moisture content. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with eggs typically deposited in protected, humid crevices in the soil. Nymphs and adults are nocturnal, emerging to forage in the dark, and their population peaks usually occur during cool, moist periods of the spring and autumn growing seasons.

Damage and harmfulness. While predominantly predatory, under certain conditions, Nemastoma can contribute to the damage of young seedlings and seeds, especially when preferred food sources are scarce. The economic damage is usually minor, but in high densities, they can negatively affect plant establishment by feeding on tender plant tissues or disrupting the local rhizosphere environment.

Protection measures. Implementing a robust management program is essential for controlling populations of soil-dwelling pests:

  • Frequent soil cultivation to disrupt breeding sites and nesting habitats.
  • Implementing proper drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
  • Cleaning up crop residues to reduce organic matter build-up.
  • Use of seed treatments to protect young plants during germination.
  • Monitoring soil populations to decide on timely chemical interventions if thresholds are exceeded.
