Description

The chrysanthemum leaf miner (Nemorimyza maculosa) is a member of the Diptera order and Agromyzidae family. It is a widespread pest that specifically targets greenhouse and field-grown plants, causing significant economic damage by affecting the foliage of ornamental flowers and various leafy vegetable crops.

This pest has a broad host range, showing a preference for plants in the Asteraceae family. Chrysanthemums are particularly vulnerable, but the pest also infests gerberas, marigolds, and various Aster species. In nursery environments, the infestation can spread rapidly if not monitored correctly.

The life cycle begins when an adult fly deposits eggs into the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae mine tunnels within the leaf, consuming the mesophyll cells. This development stage is highly protected from external environmental factors. After completing their larval development, they typically pupate either within the leaf mines or drop into the surrounding soil.

The primary damage symptoms are white, serpentine trails on the upper or lower surfaces of the leaves. Severe infestations result in extensive leaf chlorosis and necrosis. As the plant loses functional photosynthetic tissue, it weakens, stunted growth occurs, and in the case of floral crops, the aesthetic value—critical for marketability—is completely lost.

Management of the chrysanthemum leaf miner requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

  • Monitoring populations with yellow sticky cards to detect early entry.
  • Sanitation, involving the removal and disposal of infested foliage to break the cycle.
  • Application of systemic insecticides specifically labeled for leaf miners.
  • Use of biological control agents, such as parasitic wasps that predate on the larvae.
