Ash plant bug

The ash plant bug (Neoborus illitus) belongs to the family Miridae within the order Hemiptera. It is a specific pest that primarily targets ash trees (Fraxinus spp.), causing damage to the foliage and potentially hindering the health of trees in both urban and forestry environments.

These insects are specialized feeders, meaning they rely almost exclusively on ash trees for survival. Both nymphs and adults utilize their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from the developing leaves. This feeding behavior drains essential nutrients from the tree and disrupts normal physiological processes.

The life cycle of Neoborus illitus typically involves overwintering in the egg stage, which the females deposit into the bark of young twigs or leaf petioles. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the nymphs emerge and begin to feed immediately, progressing through several instars before maturing into adults capable of reproduction.

Damage symptoms are characterized by stippling, yellowing, and chlorosis on the leaves, which can look like a mottled pattern. As the feeding continues, the leaves often become distorted, curled, or scorched, leading to premature leaf drop. While healthy mature trees can tolerate some infestation, younger saplings may suffer significant stress and reduced growth vigor.

Management and control strategies involve a combination of biological monitoring and chemical intervention. Insecticides applied during the nymphal development stage are most effective. It is also recommended to maintain tree health through proper irrigation and pruning practices to help them withstand pest pressure. In cases of severe infestation, systemic insecticides applied as a soil drench or trunk spray may be necessary.
