Systematic position: The Madagascar fruit fly (Neoceratitis cyanescens) is a member of the Diptera order and the Tephritidae family. This fly is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly known for its impact on fruit production in various geographical regions.
Host plants: This species primarily targets solanaceous crops. Tomatoes are the main host, sustaining the most severe economic damage. In addition to tomatoes, it is also known to infest eggplants and various wild relatives within the Solanaceae family, making containment a complex task.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositors to deposit eggs into the skin of developing fruits. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel through the fruit flesh, consuming the internal tissues. After completing their larval development, they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.
Damage and economic impact: Infested fruits show distinct signs of injury, including small puncture marks, surface depressions, and localized discoloration.
